The library at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls is a warm and inviting space for students to study and revise in daily. It is staffed by our librarian and English teacher, Mrs Booth between 8.30 till 4.30. There is also a team of student librarians who are on hand to support their peers, offer book recommendations and assist in the smooth running of the library.
All students are automatically members of the library and can borrow 3 books for 3 weeks at a time. This is done using their ID cards.
There is a wide range of books that are available to borrow. Mrs Booth is keen on enhancing the rigour within the selection available and is developing a more thorough provision for the non-fiction section, and supplementary materials for students in Key Stage 5. There are some books that are restricted to students in Key Stages 4 and 5, and parents of younger students can opt into letting their children read books from the Young Adult selection.
In addition to this the library also has a subscription to JSTOR, as well as English Review, which can be accessed by students in Key Stage 5. There is also an ample careers section.
Students in year 7 and 8 have fortnightly library lessons with link to the English curriculum, where they develop their reading skills, discussion skills and take time to explore literature. As part of this curriculum, there are reading challenges set for the students to complete, which are contained in their reading records. All students at WGSG are expected to read for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. This not just to improve communication and comprehension but also has been proven to improve mental health.
Each month the library has a focus on a particular genre and theme of books, as well as different reading incentives, such as Bookopoly Challenge to encourage all students to read a variety of texts. There will also be events held, such World Book Day, Na-No-Ri-Mo and more.

Our Library has a wealth of research material available to all key stages including a subscription to JSTOR which is an online research resource package with over 2,800 archival journals – the majority of which are unavailable on the open web – four primary source collections, and more than 2,000 open access eBooks, the JSTOR Secondary Schools Collection provides students with a safe and trusted environment to research topics across the curriculum. JSTOR is an invaluable resource for independent study and is used by most universities in the UK. This is particularly helpful to our EPQ students. To access the JSTOR site, using the computers in the library click hereand log on using the username and password available from the library. The JSTOR research facility can then be accessed in school or at home.

WGSG take part in the annual Bookbuzz which is a scheme run by the Book Trust with the aim of further developing a love of reading and reading for pleasure. This scheme is generously funded by the PFA and allows us to be able to gift a book to every Year 7 student at the end of the Autumn term.
Research has shown that reading for pleasure has wide ranging positive effects, not just on reading ability but across general academic progress, socially and to personal well-being.

Tips for Parents & Carers to Encourage Reading
• Be seen reading by your child – newspapers, magazines and books. Discuss topics of interest or get them to read a particular article/paragraph. Students are more likely to continue to be readers in homes where books and reading are valued.
• If your child attends a sports club/youth club in the evening then reading in the car is ideal if they travel well.
• Visit your local library together and choose books that appeal to you both. Swap them afterwards, talk about which one you prefer and why. This could be something you do once a month.
• When you go shopping incorporate a visit to Waterstones for a browse of the latest books/bestsellers.
• Fifteen minutes reading a day will make a huge difference. Try to encourage your child to make this a habit; e.g. straight after brushing her teeth before bedtime. Perhaps you could read your own book with them at the same time?
