Blog week ending 6 November

We are delighted to introduce this year’s Sixth Form Head Students – a team of passionate, driven individuals who embody the values and spirit of Wilmington Grammar School for Girls and WG6. Representing both long-standing and new members of our community, they bring a wealth of experience, fresh perspectives, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact.

As leaders of the Student Senior Leadership Team (SSLT), they will play a key role in shaping student voice, championing inclusion, and strengthening the bridge between students and staff. Their vision is rooted in collaboration, empowerment, and the belief that every student should feel seen, heard, and supported.

Below, each Head Student shares a personal introduction – their journey, their motivations, and the legacy they hope to leave. We’re incredibly proud of their dedication and can’t wait to see the difference they’ll make this year.

We feel incredibly honoured to step into these roles and are excited to work with the rest of the SSLT to make a meaningful difference in our school community. This is a chance for us to share a little bit about who we are, what we stand for, and the impact we hope to have during our time as Head Students.

My name is Binu, and I have been part of Wilmington Grammar School for Girls since Year 7. Over the years, I’ve seen first-hand how our school community fosters ambition, celebrates diversity, and encourages every student to reach their full potential. Being part of this journey from the very beginning has given me a deep appreciation for the REACH values of our school, as well as a strong determination to continue shaping its future.

That sense of belonging is something I want to strengthen for all students, especially those who are newer to our school.

As Head Students, we are proud to represent such a dynamic and inspiring student body. Working alongside the wider SSLT, our goal is to ensure that every voice is heard and that meaningful change takes place where it is needed. This year, we hope to build on the school’s strengths by promoting equality, encouraging student-led initiatives, and supporting an environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute. We also hope to increase opportunities for students to share their ideas and experiences, so that everyone feels empowered to contribute to the life of the school.

We are incredibly grateful to have received these roles allowing us to make a tangible contribution to our school’s community. Here we would like to introduce ourselves a little bit and talk about our motivations, so you can get a better picture of who the head are.

My name is William, I have joined WGSG as an external student. Coming to a new school for sixth form is very nerve racking, however the wonderful community and support here made the transition feel seamless. Due to this, I made it my mission to try to give back to this school and assist in creating lasting change for the better. My main goal is to promote communication and transparency between students and teachers at WGSG; to do this I plan to work closely with the SSLT to bring about this improvement in the school environment.

Hi all! I’m Iman, and I have been a part of WGSG since Year 7. Having grown up within this supportive and inspiring community, I’ve been able to see firsthand how much student voice can shape our school experience. As Deputy Head Student, I’m passionate about making sure every student feels heard and represented. I want to help create an environment where ideas and feedback from all year groups are valued and acted upon. Working alongside the Staff Senior Leadership Team as well as the Student Leadership Team, my aim is to strengthen the sense of unity and ensure that our school continues to be a place where everyone can thrive and feel proud to belong.

We recognise the importance of being role models for the younger years and want to show them that leadership is not just about holding a title but about serving others and leaving a positive impact. Our hopes for the future are simple but powerful: to inspire students to be confident in their ambitions, to nurture a community where kindness and respect are at the heart of everything, and to create a legacy of progress that future students can carry forward.

Recently, we have been taking part in Student Leadership meetings – planning events, activities and peer mentoring schemes including;

Year 11 Student Leaders planning and delivering a range of activities including:

  • Form Time Programmes and Support structures for Y7-Y9
  • Black History Month Assemblies

Year 13 SSLT and Student Leaders

  • Feeding back School Council minutes and actions from meeting with Mr Fuller
  • Forward planning of next steps.

Congratulations to all students who attended our year group reward lunches celebrating students with the highest conduct points this term, they have been celebrating with sweet treats and games, including the use of the school switches.

Year 11 have been undertaking their mock examinations this week – their mindset and approach has been excellent. Mock exams are a vital part of the exam preparation process, providing insights and support into areas for improvement and further study as well at practice in exam techniques and time management experience.

Skrine’s Successors continues for Year 11 students! The aim of this incentive is to celebrate student engagement in lessons and attitude to learning and crucially, to reward outstanding behaviour, achievement and effort. All Successors enjoy a special ‘rewards breakfast’ in the Lodge and will be in with a chance to win a £10 Amazon voucher. Student Successors have been nominated by teachers across the school, each detailed nomination is shared, and celebrated with students. Congratulations to the students selected for demonstrating resilience, independence, and a proactive approach to their studies.

We mark Remembrance Day and support the Royal British Legion with a mix of special assemblies and form time discussions. Every year, we take donations that go directly to the RBL via the poppy appeal. If you would like your child to make a donation and receive a poppy, please send them into school with a small amount of cash – they can either get a poppy from the main reception or from Student Leaders will be visit form rooms.

Additionally, we would like to commemorate members and veterans of the Armed Forces that have links with WGSG. If your child has a link with a member of the Armed Forces (past and present), we would like to mark their contribution, and often, sacrifice. Please email remembrance@wgsg.co.uk with the student(s), the name of the person and if possible, a 40-70 word biography of them. If you have a picture, that would be even better. Our aim is to create a montage that will loop on our new screens in our foyer and reception to highlight to students, staff, and visitors with the amazing people and their acts of bravery that have links with our school.

Library update. Short Story Competition. To mark National Novel Writing Month, we’re teaming up with our Trust secondaries, WGSB and Stone Lodge for a short story competition. Last year’s Dystopia entries were brilliant (the printed book is available in the library and is being read in the first image below!) This year’s theme is “Once Upon Another Time”, inviting students to reimagine well-known tales in new and creative ways. It’s a fantastic chance for them to get creative and potentially see their work published in a professionally printed anthology. Students have been introduced to the competition in their library lessons as part of their ‘creative writing’ module. In groups students devised a short spooky story and then nominated group members to share (and in some cases, perform!) their story for the class. Our librarian, Ms Booth and in fact all of us, thoroughly enjoyed the stories and their delivery.

Introducing …. Teacher of Chemistry Miss Alfah. “With a passion for igniting curiosity and a proven track record of academic excellence, I’m thrilled to join this vibrant school community. My ambition is to build student engagement cultivating a mindset where every student not only understands chemistry but feels empowered to explore, question, and innovate – preparing them to thrive in a world shaped by science.”

In the featured lesson, Miss Alfah’s Year 12 A Level students conducted a required practical, Titration (a process of measuring the concentration of an unknown solution) Whilst recording and processing their results in a methodical and systematic manner in order for the data to be analysed and interpreted.
