BLOG WEEK ENDING 8TH DECEMBER

BLOG WEEK ENDING 8TH DECEMBER

Michelle profile We have had two opportunities to travel to our local parish church, St Michael and All Angels Church to share Christmas celebrations through Year 7 Christmas Services on Wednesday and with our Christmas Concert on Thursday evening.  On both occasions we were joined by Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, and it was particularly lovely to be able to share the Christmas Concert with our families as well.  Both were joyous and uplifting events and included heartfelt and talented contributions from students across our two schools.  Thank you to all those who provided readings, musical recitals and choir pieces, all were utterly beautiful.  Special thanks also to Mrs Dent and Mr Oso our Heads of Music.

G5Introducing Mrs Fuller, Teacher of Food and Nutrition who joins us with a vast amount of business and entrepreneurial experience having worked across the education and charity sectors as well as having launched a successful catering business.  “I initially trained as a youth worker, working for a national youth charity, before joining an outreach team working in secondary schools.  I am also a trained chef and have run my own business.  At WGSG I have been able to combine my training and passions, I am loving teaching food and nutrition to the students at WGSG!”

Our GCSE Food & Nutrition students have been studying micronutrients, which are vitamins and minerals needed by the body in small amounts.  In the pictured lesson students combines a wide range of techniques to create chocolate and avocado mousse served with raspberry jam meringue kisses.  As well as being high in a range of valuable vitamins and minerals the mousse is suitable for a vegan diet (so long as you use dark chocolate!).  Well done … some great cooking and presentation on show!

For the perfect merangue the egg whites should form stiff peaks …. and stay in the bowl when turned upside down, as demonstrated below!!

Mrs Fuller has set our next House Challenge .. The WGSG Christmas Bake-Off!  Good luck everyone, I’m very much looking forward to seeing your entries!

Year 10 GCSE Biologists have been deepening their knowledge of osmosis and specifically in this lesson, investigatIng the effects of salt concentrations on a potato chip.  Students hypothosised the outcomes before then recording the percentage changes and the relationship with the variables in the samples.

WG6 Psychology A Level students attended the Psychology in Action enrichment day in Central London.  The day comprised of five session which examined the theories and applications of psychology in the modern world.

Each engaging session was designed to inspire students and help them realise their potential and the impact they can have on the world.  A special session on examination success gave students hints and tips to excel.

Our A Level Geographers have been studying the global distribution of hazards.  Students travelled to the Natural History Museum to see the Volcanoes and Earthquakes Gallery to support their study of Tectonics Hazards module before travelling to the Royal Geographical Society for three lectures.

To help bring a little smile and some pre-Christmas cheer I’m delighted to share the wonderful photo of Mr Green with his new daughter Poppy!  A big congratulations to Mr and Mrs Green on the birth of their baby girl Poppy who was born on Saturday 25th November weighing 9lbs exactly.

G19Please join me in congratulating Darcy B and Amelie W of Year 9 who have been selected to represent England at the Dance World Cup in Prague in 2024.  They took part in World Cup England Qualifiers which saw a record 5,000 entries from the best in England and successfully placed top five in two of their entries meaning they will compete these two dances in the final in Prague.  The final will see around 8,000 dancers from 64 countries compete over ten days, with an amazing opening and closing ceremony, galas and masterclasses at the Prague Congress Centre.

Finally, thank you to all those who supported and attended our Christmas Gift Market.  it was a fantastic event and the current total stands £3k raised for the school which is pretty impressive!  For me, the highlight of the event was the Christmas Hampers, the continuing generosity in act and ‘heart’ of our students and their families is incredible.  Countless amazing hampers were carefully assembled and decorated ready for donation to local families and elderly residents as well as donations for our PTFA event.  Little wonder they are such valued gifts that bring so much joy to their recipients.  Thank you to the local volunteers who collected and distributed the hampers (pictured below with students)  .. spreading a little WGSG Christmas Cheer to so many in the local area.  During our Year 7 Christmas Service Rev’d Carl Chambers shared an instance of the positive impact of your generosity .. a lady in her 80s said she was feeling low and despondent but that the hamper, and the fact that you had made it with love and with her/someone like her in mind not only delighted her but reaffirmed her faith in human kindness!  Each hamper has had a similarly BIG impact.  Thank you so much.
