Blog Week Ending 3rd April

This Term, (like most!) has been an incredibly exciting one, with so many opportunities for learning outside the classroom and causes for celebration. Our Culture Day tomorrow encapsulates the joy of our vibrant school community – everyone coming together to share customs, clothes and heritage that is important to us. This year we are delighted to be hosting Dartford MP, Jim Dickson who is keen to see for himself how cultural understanding and celebration is embedded across our school, and I know students are looking forward to sharing our day with him. After the Easter break, we will share photos and stories from the day.

Mr Harrison together with subject teachers accompanied Year 11 students on a high-octave revision weekend to PGL Specialist teachers provided personalised support and guidance, targeting key GCSE curriculum topics through tailored revision sessions on core subjects (Maths, English and Science). This individualised attention in conjunction with group work and personal study at home helps clarify concepts and maximise exam preparation. Research shows that regular revision and practice are essential for long-term retention of knowledge. The weekend featured loads of motivational and physical team activities to keep both body and mind active! Adventure activities included, towering trapeze, archery, laser tag and a silent disco! A great way to let off steam between revision sessions and come back refreshed and energised ready for the next revision task.

Ms Aggrey’s Year 9 Chemists took part in a required practical to make salt crystals from a carbonate. Students first prepared a sample of salt by reacting sulfuric acid with copper carbonate before filtering and evaporating the solution to make salt crystals. Students demonstrated excellent knowledge and scientific aptitude throughout, well done!

This week we have started our process to appoint our new cohort of WG6 student leaders. Of these, some brave souls have also put themselves forward to be our new Head Students. Eleven current Year 12 students were shortlisted and put through their paces! Each candidate had an interview with Mr Fuller, Mr Atkins, and our two current Head Students, Jael and Sam. They had to give a two-minute talk to an assembled group of Year 7 students on what one of our REACH values meant to them. Last, but not least, was the (fearsome) student panels, where school council representatives quizzed our candidates based on their own questions. Based on all this, we will choose two Head Students, two Deputy Head Students, and a wider SSLT (Student Senior Leadership team). Results will be with you in the next blog!

In what has become a Maths Department Easter tradition, Year 7 students enjoyed a crème egg mathematical puzzlers lesson! Questions included, estimate your teacher’s height in crème eggs and how many crème eggs would you need to eat to get 100% of all your daily nutrients intake?!

Balancing rigorous GCSE studies, PPEs, and intense weekly training, Ife A (10W), Kasey S (10E), Amelia D (10E), and Izzy H (11W) have had a phenomenal season playing for Dartfordians RFC U16s Girls. Their dedication and resilience has led them to an extraordinary year of victories.

The Journey to Success

Izzy has been playing rugby since Year 3, while Kasey picked up the sport at the start of Year 7. Amelia and Ife discovered their passion for rugby in Year 8, thanks to an after-school club run by former WGSG staff member, Mrs Fiander and Dartfordians coach Dave, who generously volunteered their time to introduce girls to the sport. It was in that club that Amelia and Ife fell in love with rugby, later joining Kasey and Izzy at Dartfordians RFC, where their journey to success truly began.

Making History

Ife, Kasey, Amelia, Izzy, and the rest of the Dartfordians U16s girls team dominated the season, winning every match and remaining undefeated in Kent, the League, and across London & the Southeast. Their incredible run only came to an end in the National semi-finals, securing their place among the top four teams in England. Praise God!

🏆 Kent U16s League Champions – Dominating the league with skill and determination.

🏆 London & Southeast Champions – Defeating top teams across the region to claim the prestigious title.

🏆 Kent County Cup Final Winners – Securing the title after a thrilling victory against Medway U16 Girls.

🏅 National Cup Semi-Finalists – Competing against the best in the country and earning a place among England’s top four U16s teams.

This remarkable season also saw the girls travel to Bristol for the National Cup semi-finals, showcasing their talent on a national stage.

Recognition and Celebration

Their success has been celebrated far and wide, with Dartfordians RFC acknowledging their incredible achievements. A full match report from the Kent Cup Final and other matches are available on the club’s website:

Nina started playing rugby for Sidcup in Year 7 and currently plays for Sidcup U18s, Beckenham Ladies 1st XV and 2nd XV as well as eggchaser 7s. Along the way Nina has won numerous trophies and accolades travelling and playing internationally.

Nina has made an enormous contribution to our WG6 rugby programme and we are incredibly delighted for her! … especially Mr Powell and Mr Corrigan at WGSB!

Year 12 Politics students visited City Hall, London to see how the London Mayor and the cities government works as part of their studies into how devolution in Britain works.

In the morning the students attended the monthly ‘Mayors Question time’, where London Mayor Sadiq Khan answers questions from London Assembly members. This saw some lively debate taking place! We were fortunate to be recognised when we arrived with a shout out.

After a nice lunch in the brilliant spring sunshine, we attended an education session, led by Richard from the Education team. This furthered the students’ knowledge and understanding of the roles and work of the Mayor of London. As ever, the students were excellent ambassadors for WG6 and were really engaged throughout the day.
